Exactly two weeks ago, Fordham students began returning to campus for the spring 2021 semester. In that time, COVID-19 cases within the university body have skyrocketed. Fordham has yet to provide a comprehensive plan regarding the more than likely possibility that we reach New York State's threshold of 100 or more cases. Based on the State policy, in the event of 100 cases, we would move to a fully-online academic setting with systematic shutdowns of extracurricular locations, but where do we go from there? Do operation hours change for dining venues? Will there be a curfew for on-campus access and departure? What if cases keep going up and we have to go home? The spiral of speculation goes on. As a Jesuit University, Fordham maintains "cura personalis," or care for the whole person, as one of their core values. By withholding a contingency plan from the student body, university parents, and even faculty in some cases, they are neglecting their own commitments made to the Fordham family. This has caused immense stress and anxiety for everyone affected, leaving students to petition for answers instead of being given them directly. We urge the Fordham Administration to provide a contingency plan that addresses the imminent arrival at 100 cases on campus, as well as a plan in the event that the situation worsens.
