Ford need to fix the wind noise issue in their new aluminum body F150

The Issue

PROBLEM BREWING SINCE LAST YEAR NEW ALUMINUM MODEL F150 WAS INTRODUCED.

The new aluminum body style F150s of model year 2015 and 2016  are being noticed to have an annoying and distinctive wind noise and door rattling pattern that starts at around 45 miles per hour  and worsens with increasing speeds. New owners throughout North America have been complaining to dealers and taking in their trucks for evaluation and fix, but no cause has been explained or solution offered to the problem.   The most likely cause of the obnoxious wind noise is either the aluminum body, poor engineering design, or simply a defective manufacturing.

One of the largest online forum of F150 www.f150forum.com where owners come together to show off pictures of their new trucks to discussing much more advanced topics such as engine replacement and modifications.  This is what some owners have to say:

"While driving when the truck experiences the normal little bumps on a paved road or highway I get this noise that sounds like the seal is broken for a second and seals back up. So as your driving down the road it will keep happening over and over. " - Socal805 who started the online thread back in April of 2015. This post has now generated over 442 comments. The problems is shared by the owners of 2016 model as well.  "I'm willing to bet it leads to a redesigned seal that will just be a running manufacturing change. Hopefully lead to a TSB for us current owners." suggests one user doolin64.

"I get a whistle noise from the windshield and a lot of wind noise on the drivers side. It sounds like I have the window rolled down a little. I will try to upload a video I took so you can hear the noise it makes." reports one senior member.

One owner reports "I hope ford comes up with a fix for this. My truck has been in the shop 3 times and they tried adjusting the doors and then tried replacing the weather stripping. None of this helped. I think its a design flaw. I can put my fingers between the upper part of the door and the seal while riding and feel the movement of the door. I took a ride in a friend's 2014 and no movement at all...." comments yellowbulletxf on the forum.

After giving up on Ford, many owners have finally resorted to taking matters in their own hands. Some strategies that have been utilized with varying degrees of success include: removing the door panel, application of sound proof mat, reapplication of weather stripping, door realignment, disconnecting grill shutters- all with varying results.

"Thats the problem we all have. The corners don't seal because the weatherstripping is super thin and collapses easily. I ordered some tubing from lowes (they were out locally) and as soon as that comes in, i'm tubing the whole seals." states one commentator.

In most cases, dealers share the frustration of owners because there hasn't been any solution offered by the Ford Motor Co. Ford Motor Co is failing to acknowledge that there is a real problem and they need to come up with a solution fast.

One owner shared the print out of the service perfomed at the dealer. " Customer states there is a wind noise from the drivers side when the wind is blowing from the driver right side. I have verified noise with the customer." After describing in details attemps to follow the service bulletin G000020, the tech concludes "Taped off both mirrors, and test drove, noise was still present. Taped off windshield, and both driver and passenger rear doors. Noise was still present. Taped off all body seams, and noise could still be heard."

SOLUTION:

FORD needs to get back to the drawing board with engineers, designers, and plant superviors to figure out what is contributing to the noise & rattling- Either a design flaw or manufacturing defect and provide it's customer with a prompt and satisfactory solution. At the rate this complain is being discussed and reported among owners, it is in their own best interest.
