The Issue
My name is a face among many in Vernon, NJ, who has experienced an alarming surge in electricity bills since Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) installed their new smart meters. I, like many in my community, have seen bills increase as high as 100%. For over a decade living here in Vernon, my summertime bill never exceeded $350. And yet, since JCP&L's new meters were installed, my bill has soared to a staggering $600. This happened in spite of a blackout that lasted over two and a half days.
This sudden, hefty increase isn't just personal - it's a community-wide concern affecting everyone's expenses. JCP&L's smart meters are staggering inefficiencies that seem to further contribute to frequent power outages. It's an issue that needs to be addressed.
We are calling for JCP&L to take down their new inefficient smart meters causing such dramatic bill increases. Additionally, we want the power to choose an alternative supplier in Vernon, NJ, so we can turn to a more reliable company that won’t treat us as cash cows.
Our plea reaches beyond the bounds of our county. It is a precedent we need to set for all communities served by JCP&L, especially those in Sussex, NJ. We deserve efficient power provision and fair billing practices.
