For Jordan Brand to Properly Retro the Air Jordan 6 White/Infrared
The Issue
In February of 1991, Michael Jordan began sporting the Air Jordan VI, where he carried the Chicago Bulls to the franchise's first-ever Finals—and eventually, their first championship title. And while Jordan and his signature shoes had already claimed the top spot in the sneaker game, the triumph only heightened the hype for the AJ VI. The silhouette was soon spotted on some of pop culture's biggest icons, cementing it as the moment's hottest sneaker, on and off the court. This model finally became my first pair of Air Jordans (I had to size up and wear them for 2 years of basketball), but they were mine and they were something I'd always cherish.
This shoe has never been properly retro'd. The tongue height has been much lower, the materials have never matched the original, especially on the upper ankle, where there appears to be an extra layer stitched over the top and don't get me started on the toe box. The original retro in 2000 was actually my first retro. In my opinion, the Black/Deep Infrared is the closest we've seen to the original. Then the shoe was branded with that dreaded, "Jumpman AIR" logo instead of NIKE AIR on the heel. Fast forward to 2015 with the Off-White/Maroon colorway, as they were dubbed part of the, "Remastered" line. While this was an improvement, it still didn't feel like 1991. We've seen the Black/Infrareds and Carmines (with a semi-pink midsole) retro with NIKE AIR since, but there has been a lull in original colorways being re-released.
Now is the time for Nike/Jordan Brand to revamp the Air Jordan VI lineup and retro it to its truest form. I've hashtagged this campaign as #AirJordan6Redux hoping that it catches on. JB should start with the White/Infrareds since they have never retro'd with NIKE AIR on the heel. Then I'd love to see the Black/Infrareds and Sport Blues return as well. Also, we don't need them to be "pre-aged", just hit those original specs. Thank you for your support!
