The Issue

My close family member took her own life because the mental health help she needed was inadequate and difficult to access. She was pushed aside, mistreated and let down. Her struggle is not an isolated case. Many people facing mental health challenges do not receive the critical support they need in their times of personal crisis. Tragically, too many lives are lost as a result of our failing to address this critical issue effectively.

Mental health is a pressing issue that affects millions of individuals globally. In the UK alone, approximately 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem each year, according to the charity Mind. Globally, over 720,000 people die by suicide every year, according to the World Health Organisation. This equates to approximately 1 in every 100 deaths worldwide. Despite these significant numbers, access to quality mental health care remains elusive for far too many.

The current systems in place are overloaded and underfunded. Waiting times for treatment extend for months, which can be a matter of life and death for those in severe distress. Moreover, stigma and lack of awareness often prevent individuals from seeking help, further exacerbating the problem.

We are calling on local and national government bodies, healthcare providers, and the community at large to:

1. Increase funding and resources for mental health services to reduce waiting times and improve the quality of care.
2. Train healthcare professionals thoroughly so they can provide compassionate and effective support.
3. Create awareness campaigns to combat stigma and encourage individuals to seek support without fear of judgment.

By implementing these actionable steps, we can help save lives and provide comfort and hope to those in need of mental health support. Please sign this petition to demand better mental health care and support systems. Together, we can make a difference and honor those like my family member, who should never have had to suffer alone.
