Allergen Labels On Restaurant Menus

Allergen Labels On Restaurant Menus
The Issue
Currently, restaurants are not required to list allergens on their menus. They are only required to list the calories and state that the daily calorie intake for an individual is 2,000 calories. The FDA states that buissness must provide" total calories; total fat; saturated fat; trans fat; cholesterol; sodium; total carbohydrates; sugars; fiber; and protein" if they can provide this information they can provide allergen information as well. Right now, no where are they required to state allergens with the food or possible allergens. This can be extremely life threatening to those with life threatening food allergies. These individuals may go out and eat a food that they eat everyday however the particular restaurant adds in their allergen. Resulting in them needing life saving medications and hospital visits. Which could result in removing their ability to eat out in public. Isolating these individuals from their friends and families. If restaurants were required to list the top 8 allergens that are included in their food items under each dish it can save thousands of lives and alleviate the fear that millions experience when they eat out.
