FOCUS ON REAL ISSUES, INDIA: Stop Threatening and Targeting Creators Over Bad Jokes

The Issue

To:
The Government of India,
Law Enforcement Authorities,
Media Houses, and Concerned Citizens,

In recent times, we have witnessed an alarming trend in India where content creators are being relentlessly targeted, threatened, and even facing legal action for making bad jokes or expressing opinions.

The most recent case involving popular YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia (BeerBiceps), comedian Samay Raina, Apoorva Makhija and their video editor, Sagar, from the discussion on India’s Got Latent, has taken an extremely disturbing turn.

We are not here to defend bad jokes. If a joke is offensive/problematic, call it out, criticize it, debate it—but do not weaponize laws meant for serious crimes to suppress speech and humor.

What’s Happening?

Ranveer Allahbadia (BeerBiceps) is fearing for his life and that of his family after receiving threats over a comment he made during a discussion. He has since apologized and clarified his stance, yet the outrage machinery refuses to let this go.

Comedian Samay Raina, known for his humor, is being viciously targeted, with demands for his arrest gaining momentum online.

Apoorva Makhija has been receiving rape threats—an absolutely horrifying and unacceptable consequence of online outrage. If we claim to be offended by words, how can we justify responding with such extreme and violent threats?

Sagar, the video editor, is also facing legal action, even though his role was simply technical. Holding an editor legally responsible for a panel discussion is an absurd overreach.

There are calls for arrests and legal actions that far exceed any reasonable consequence for a joke or an opinion. This is an abuse of legal provisions that should be reserved for genuine threats to public safety.

Why This Is Dangerous?

If we start jailing comedians, YouTubers, and even video editors for jokes, where does this end? Who decides what is acceptable?

If we allow mob outrage to dictate law enforcement, we set a dangerous precedent where anyone with a large following can silence any kind of voices.

While we obsess over canceling creators, real national issues—rising inflation, unemployment, environmental crises, and crimes against women—are being ignored.

What Do We Demand?

Stop misusing laws to criminalize speech. Jokes, however bad, should not lead to FIRs and arrests.

Ensure the safety of those being targeted. The threats against Ranveer Allahbadia, Samay Raina, Apoorva Makhija, and Sagar must be taken seriously, and those making rape and death threats should face consequences.

Redirect focus to real issues. We cannot let the legal system be hijacked by selective outrage while more pressing matters remain unaddressed.

"India is a democracy that has prided itself on free expression, humor, and debate."

"I hope society maintains a proper perspective on the scale of this issue compared to others that need more outrage." - Raghu Ram on his Instagram Story

We stand with the creators facing unjust persecution and urge authorities to focus on real threats to society rather than policing jokes (bad or good).

Sign this petition to support these creators, a fair legal system, and protection against mob-driven outrage. - We will be send this petition with all the signatures to the Home Minister of India, and to the Department of Legal Affairs.
