Floridians Denounce Inhumane Detention Camp

Floridians Denounce Inhumane Detention Camp
The Issue
"Alligator Alcatraz" is an abomination and a stain on our Democracy.
It is not a mere detention camp - as if that weren't bad enough. It is a vile and inhumane plan to mistreat immigrants—no better than what happened in Germany in the 1930s and '40s, and it is stunningly similar to those actions of ethnic cleansing.
These people are not being held in humane conditions, and the majority have no criminal records. According to Human Rights Watch, the majority of detained immigrants have no previous criminal record aside from immigration violations. They are often locked up in facilities that resemble high-security prisons, even sharing space with convicted criminals, merely due to their status as undocumented individuals.
But make no mistake -- THIS "facility" is worse -- it is horrific. Set on fragile land amid the Florida Everglades (a once-protected wildlife area!), even the mildest of hurricanes would mean certain death for the inhabitants confined in cages in tents. The mosquitoes and heat alone, and cramped conditions, are all a breeding ground for disease. Detainees are packed into cages, with little relief, and forced to drink from modified toilets. They do not have reasonable access to medical care. The fact that this place even exists is a crime against humanity and America's shame.
Notoriously dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz," this "detention facility" must be brought into the spotlight for its degrading treatment of immigrants. The operation is becoming infamous for violating basic human rights. Reports from former detainees allege overcrowding, lack of basic sanitary needs, and limited access to legal aid or medical attention. How can a state known for its hospitality and warmth allow such a travesty to persist?
Moreover, how can a country whose very premise was based on freedom, and fought against Nazi Germany and their many "detention camps" atrocities, condone this?
The United Nations' Convention Against Torture, to which the United States is a signatory, defines torture as acts that cause severe physical or mental suffering, which is happening to these immigrants. Our great state of Florida is gravely failing these individuals by keeping them in such appalling conditions, and it is past time for us to act.
We call upon Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida state legislators, and federal immigration authorities to immediately close this facility and relocate its detainees to more suitable environments - and PROVIDE DUE PROCESS!! Many of these people should not even have been kidnapped by ICE in the first place! Instead of treating them as criminals, they should be given access to legal processes and the opportunity to integrate into society.
Join us in demanding accountability and justice. Sign this petition to denounce Florida's Immigration Concentration Camp in the Everglades and protect the human rights of all people, regardless of their immigration status. By signing, you are standing for justice, dignity, and humanity. Together, we can make Florida a beacon of hope and sanctuary, not a place of despair and oppression. Please sign and share widely.
