Florida's just improved its animal welfare laws. Tell Mississippi to do the same.

The Issue

Florida just raised the bar for animal welfare—Mississippi is still stuck at the bottom.

This month, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed “Trooper’s Law” and “Dexter’s Law,” increasing penalties for severe animal cruelty and making it a crime to abandon pets during natural disasters. These laws were passed because the public demanded action—and leaders listened.

Meanwhile, in Mississippi, first-time animal abusers still face only misdemeanor charges—even for shocking acts of cruelty. There are no felony penalties for neglect. And animals suffering without food, water, or shelter are left unprotected by vague, outdated laws.

Mississippi ranks near the bottom of every national animal protection list. It’s past time for change.

We’re calling on the Mississippi Legislature and Governor to immediately pass legislation that:

  • Makes severe cruelty and neglect felony offenses on the first charge
  • Criminalizes pet abandonment, especially during emergencies
  • Requires psychological evaluation and bans repeat abusers from owning animals.

Animal abuse isn’t a minor issue—it’s a warning sign. Stronger laws don’t just protect pets—they protect communities.

If Florida can take action, Mississippi has no excuse. Sign now and demand laws that treat animal cruelty like the serious crime it is.
