BREAKING NEWS: FLORIDA’S DOG CHAINING LAW MAKES MORE PROGRESS AS FL SB 650 IS INTRODUCED!
In 2012 in Jacksonville, Florida 17-month-old Dylan Andreas was attacked and killed by a chained Rottweiler making him the fourth child in Florida to be killed by a chained dog. Soon after Dylan’s death, Jacksonville passed an ordinance banning unattended dog tethering. To date, nineteen Florida counties and dozens of cities and towns have attended-tethering-only ordinances, covering nearly 65% of Florida's populous.
Florida HB 177 (sp. E. Slosberg) and its companion SB 650, (sp. A. Taddeo) prohibits unattended tethering of dogs thereby extending protection to the remaining 35% of Florida's population. To date, the bills have the bipartisan support and twenty-two co-sponsors.
