It’s official, the dog chaining legislation, Florida HB 177 sponsored by Representative Emily Slosberg (D), has been formalized and within a few weeks it will move to a Florida House subcommittee for discussion.  We are expecting a companion Bill from the Florida Senate any day.  The Bill(s) already have twenty-two co-sponsors. At present, nineteen Florida counties and dozens of cities and towns prohibit unattended tethering, encompassing nearly 65% of Florida's population.  If passed, HB 177 will prohibit unattended dog/cat tethering throughout the State. 

In other news, Florida HB 45 sponsored by Representative Sam Killebrew (R) has been introduced. If passed, it will prohibit the sale of dogs and cats in retail stores throughout Florida. Over seventy local governments in Florida and four states currently ban the practice.  Every year millions of dogs and cats are sold in pet shops throughout the US.  To meet demand, these dogs and cats are produced in massive breeding facilities known as “puppy mills,” often with little regard for the health and well being of the breeding animals or their offspring.  Naïve buyers purchase these pets only to learn they are sick, injured or suffer behavioral problems that will  require thousands of dollars in care.

What can you do to insure that HB 177 and HB 45 become laws?
