Rename FIU's "8th Street Campus Kitchen" to "Fresh Street"
The Issue
On August 1st 2018, Florida International University officially announced a new 10 year contract with Chartwells Higher Education, becoming the university's official food service provider.
One of the first changes that was implemented was to rename the cafeteria that's hosted in the Graham Center from the infamously titled "The Fresh Food Company" to "8th Street Campus Kitchen", a change that anyone that wasn't a freshman despised and would soon feel nostalgic over the old name.
No longer could we ask our friends if we were going to "Fresh", but now a name that felt so much weaker than it's predecessor that anyone that remembers the name dare not call it it's new one.
As the Fall 2021 semester nears completion, the final few that were around when the place was nicknamed Fresh are seniors and are approaching graduation, including me. When we leave, the legacy of Fresh will disappear from FIU, where the place where people hung out, chilled, and act infamously fresh food will no longer have the identity that it used to have.
However, I've devised a solution; to offer that 8th Street Campus Kitchen be renamed to something greater, something that combines the past with the modern. Where you're walking through a path similar to a street, walking by different "locations" each with their own name. Hence the name: "Fresh Street".
My friends love it. Everyone I've mentioned to loves it. It not only makes sense but could be a way to bring back the name "Fresh" without infringing on trademarks implemented by previous companies. It's a term that could unite us all, and could bring the term "Fresh" back into the soul of FIU.
Barstool FIU still makes memes about Fresh, but they're beginning to be more nostalgic as it's been three years since the change. With 8th Street Campus Kitchen, it just couldn't feel the same. The only ones that went along with it were the people that didn't know what it's old name was. And yet, upon hearing it's old name, it brings back memories that never were, yet could have been. And with that, all I can say now is:
