Kill Racing not Greyhounds

Kill Racing not Greyhounds
The Issue
A greyhound died on one of Florida's dog tracks about every three days between June 2013 and December 2014.
This is not okay. When did it become acceptable to put animals lives at risk for gambling and entertainment purposes? These poor dogs are subjected to awful living conditions. being overworked, and simply destroyed or put down if they aren't good enough, or suffer from an injury such as severed toes, broken legs, spinal cord paralysis, broken necks and cardiac arrest.
While Greyhounds may live 13 or more years, they are usually 18 months to 5 years old when they are retired from racing. Many are deemed unfit to race after an injury, some have little desire to race, while others are no longer fast enough to be profitable. While some of these dogs are retired and sent to rescue groups, others are simply killed or returned to breeding facilities to serve as breeding stock.
Housed at commercial racetracks, the dogs spend the majority of their lives in confinement—stacked in double-decker cages in warehouse-style kennels for up to twenty or more hours per day. The cages are just large enough for the dogs to stand in. Most of the enclosures are not heated or air-conditioned, causing the short-coated dogs to suffer during severe weather temperatures. Many dogs suffer from fleas, ticks and internal parasites.
There are twelve operational greyhound tracks in Florida, including tracks with seasonal racing as well as those who conduct year-round live racing. By law, the holders of dog track licenses are required to offer at least 100 live racing performances each year. In 2013, a total of 3,546 greyhound racing performances were held. It is estimated that 8,000 greyhounds are housed at track kennel compounds across the state.
Many states so far have made it against the law to race dogs. But unfortunately Florida is still allowing it. I am taking a stand to help take this down. Animals deserve so much more out of life and have so much love to give to us. Let's put a stop to the madness and get these beautiful creatures out of the hell they are living in.
