Commissioner Corcoran: Please. Save Distance Learning.
The Issue
FLORIDA LEADERS & COMMISSIONER CORCORAN: Do The Right Thing!! Prioritize the health and safety of our students, teachers, school administrators, and their families by Reauthorize necessary funds for the continuation of the Distance Learning platform for all VPK-12 students, for the remainder of the 2020-21 School Year.
PLEASE:
1. Allow Parents, who have completed multiple surveys asking them choose between brick and mortar or distance learning to KEEP THEIR CHOICE for the 2020-21 school year. 85% of Martin County students, 58% of Palm Beach County students. and 75% of Broward County Students are VIRTUAL!!! Without Distance learning available as a choice, in the middle of a global pandemic, parents & students will be asked to either give up their choice to remain a part of their home or choice school communities (VPK—12), in favor of an entirely different, albeit virtual, currículum. MIDWAY through an already challenging school year. Alternatively, you will be FORCING many parents to risk the health of their children, and their families. Because many will be left with no other choice but to return to in-person learning, thereby potentially EXPOSING THEM TO COVID, and EXPOSING THEIR VULNERABLE RELATIVES (parents, siblings, grandparents). Keeping the Distance Learning platform may also more easily allow for the continued ability to social distance in classrooms! This will be impossible if schools fill to capacity!!
2. Allow for VIRTUAL TEACHERS to be MATCHED WITH VIRTUAL STUDENTS and VICE VERSA!! BECAUSE TEACHERS MUST BE ALLOWED TO PROTECT THEIR HEALTH & that of THEIR OWN VULNERABLE FAMILY MEMBERS!!!!! No Teacher Should Have To Choose Between Keeping Their Job (And Health Care Benefits) or Jeopardizing their, or Their Family Member’s, Health & Safety!! In many cases, this INCLUDES CHILDREN & SPOUSES with Pre-Existing Conditions!!! Giving teachers the same choice as Parents will also allow for DEDICATED TEACHERS FOR STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN EACH EDUCATIONAL PLATFORM!!!! THIS WILL LIKELY RESULT IN IMPROVED EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES FOR ALL STUDENTS, whether in-person or virtual.
