Flexible Working for New Mothers

The Issue

7 in 10 Indian working women quit or consider quitting their jobs. 

The system currently in place does not support a working mother.

For women who desire to continue their career even after becoming a mother there are loads of challenges.

There is a constant pull between office work and home and childcare, most often this constant struggle leads to women abandoning their careers and aspirations.

And even if the woman stays put and continues with her career, there is something called as “Child Penalty”, also known as the “Motherhood Penalty” which she will eventually have to face.

Women are paid considerably less than men, with some research showing that the gender pay gap between women and men in the same jobs with equivalent qualifications can be as much as 34%. Now, even among women, mothers face higher discrimination than non-mothers. 

The current system in place forces a woman to choose between motherhood and career.

The system needs to be redesigned:

  • To provide flexibility to women to choose whether to work from home or come to office.
  • There should be an option for the New Mother to opt in for more paid leaves post her maternity leave if she wants to.
  • There should be no bias done on the basis of maternity leave.
