The Issue

Flexible Work Equality Act

We are calling on the UK Government to introduce a Flexible Work Equality Act to ensure fair and equal access to remote and flexible working for all employees, particularly those with health conditions, disabilities, and caring responsibilities.

The way we work has changed. Remote and flexible working are no longer luxuries. They are proven, effective ways of working that improve productivity, wellbeing, and job retention. Yet many people are still denied these opportunities without valid justification.

There are simply not enough flexible or remote roles available, and this lack of opportunity is actively excluding disabled people and those with long-term health conditions from the workforce. Many are willing and able to work, but cannot access suitable roles due to rigid workplace expectations.

For individuals living with chronic illness, disability, or mental health conditions, inflexible working requirements create unnecessary and unfair barriers. This forces many capable people out of employment entirely, not because they are unable to work, but because workplaces have not adapted.

This is not just inconvenient. It is unequal.

The Flexible Work Equality Act would:

Make flexible and remote working a default right, unless employers can provide a clear, evidence-based reason why it is not possible
Increase the availability of flexible and remote roles across all sectors
Strengthen protections against discrimination for those requesting flexible work
Support people with health conditions, disabilities, and caring responsibilities to remain in or return to work
Encourage inclusive, modern workplaces that reflect today’s society
No one should be excluded from work due to outdated and inflexible systems or a lack of accessible job opportunities.

We urge the UK Government to take action and introduce the Flexible Work Equality Act to create a fairer, more inclusive workforce for everyone.
