Please protect our forest home!

We the red squirrels of Groenendaal Arboretum, part of the Sonian Forest near Brussels, Belgium, are sending out an urgent cry for your help. The Flemish Agency for Nature and Forests (Agentschap Natuur en Bos) and the Flemish Ministry of Tourism are planning to build a 20-metre high, 1.1-kilometre-long walkway, access elevator and a 50-metre-high observation tower in the treetops of our home in the Arboretum, to encourage more international tourists to the Sonian Forest. In the words of former Flemish Tourism Minister, Ben Weyts (N-VA), this walkway “will make the Sonian Forest an even greater tourist attraction.” According to newspaper reports the Tourism Ministry has received a 3-million-euro subsidy to build this walkway and its associated infrastructure.

No environmental impact assessment has been completed for this project to evaluate its potential long-term negative effects on all the diverse wildlife making the Groenendaal Arboretum its home. So far, we have always been able to find refuge from human interference in the tree canopy, to feed, and raise our young, but now even our treetops are under threat from tourism, all day long, seven days a week, year-round. Already the wildlife in the surrounding Sonian Forest is suffering from ever-increasing pressure from human recreational use – where will it ever stop?

The Arboretum and the Sonian Forest are not just trees – they are our home and the home of many other species of animals and plants. Please, will you sign and forward our petition begging the Flemish Agency for Nature and Forests and the Ministry of Tourism to abandon this project and instead devote their resources to projects that care for both wildlife and people?

Bescherm ons huis in het bos!

Wij, de rode eekhoorns van Groenendaal Arboretum, een deel van het Zoniënwoud bij Brussel, België, doen een dringende oproep om uw hulp. Het Vlaams Agentschap Natuur en Bos en het Vlaams Ministerie van Toerisme zijn van plan om in de boomtoppen van ons huis in het Arboretum een 20 meter hoge, 1,1 kilometer lange loopbrug, een toegangslift en een 50 meter hoge uitkijktoren te bouwen, om meer internationale toeristen naar het Zoniënwoud te lokken. In de woorden van voormalig Vlaams minister van Toerisme, Ben Weyts (N-VA), zal deze loopbrug "van het Zoniënwoud een nog grotere toeristische trekpleister maken". Volgens krantenberichten heeft het ministerie van Toerisme een subsidie van 3 miljoen euro gekregen voor de aanleg van deze loopbrug en de bijbehorende infrastructuur.

Voor dit project is geen milieueffectbeoordeling uitgevoerd om de mogelijke negatieve gevolgen op lange termijn te evalueren voor de vele verschillende dieren die het Arboretum Groenendaal tot hun thuis maken. Tot nu toe hebben we altijd onze toevlucht kunnen zoeken in de boomkruinen, om ons te voeden en onze jongen groot te brengen, maar nu worden zelfs onze boomtoppen bedreigd door het toerisme, de hele dag door, zeven dagen per week, het hele jaar door. De fauna in het omringende Zoniënwoud lijdt nu al onder de steeds toenemende druk van het recreatieve gebruik door de mens - waar zal het ooit ophouden?

Het Arboretum en het Zoniënwoud zijn niet alleen maar bomen - ze zijn ons thuis en het thuis van vele andere soorten dieren en planten. Wilt u alstublieft onze petitie ondertekenen en doorsturen waarin we het Vlaams Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos en het Ministerie van Toerisme smeken om van dit project af te zien en in plaats daarvan hun middelen te besteden aan projecten die zorg dragen voor zowel de wilde dieren als de mensen?

Protégez notre forêt !

Nous, les écureuils roux de l'Arboretum de Groenendaal, qui fait partie de la forêt de Soignes, près de Bruxelles, en Belgique, lançons un appel urgent à votre aide. L'Agence flamande pour la nature et les forêts (Agentschap Natuur en Bos) et le Ministère flamand du tourisme prévoient de construire une passerelle de 20 mètres de haut et de 1,1 kilomètre de long, un ascenseur d'accès et une tour d'observation de 50 mètres de haut pour atteindre la cime des arbres de notre forêt, afin d'encourager davantage de touristes internationaux à visiter la forêt de Soignes. Selon l'ancien ministre flamand du tourisme, Ben Weyts (N-VA), cette passerelle "fera de la forêt de Soignes une attraction touristique encore plus grande". Selon des articles de presse, le ministère du tourisme a reçu une subvention de 3 millions d'euros pour construire cette passerelle et les infrastructures liées.

Aucune étude d'impact sur l'environnement n'a été réalisée pour ce projet afin d'évaluer ses effets négatifs potentiels à long terme sur l'ensemble de la faune diversifiée qui habite l'Arboretum de Groenendaal. Jusqu'à présent, nous avons toujours pu trouver refuge contre les interférences humaines dans la canopée, pour nous nourrir et élever nos petits, mais aujourd'hui, même la cime de nos arbres est menacée par le tourisme, toute la journée, sept jours par semaine, toute l'année. La faune et la flore de la forêt de Soignes environnante souffrent déjà de la pression grandissante exercée par les activités récréatives humaines.

L'Arboretum et la forêt Soignes ne sont pas seulement des arbres - ils sont notre maison et la maison de nombreuses autres espèces animales et végétales. S'il vous plaît, pouvez-vous signer et transmettre notre pétition demandant à l'Agence flamande pour la nature et les forêts et au Ministère du tourisme d'abandonner ce projet et de consacrer leurs ressources à des projets qui prennent soin à la fois de la faune et de la flore et des personnes ?
