FL RESIDENTS!-Pass SB122-Sale of Cats & Dogs: Written notices of genetic disorders (pure breeds)
The Issue
THE PHOTO IS A BASSET HOUND WITH REMOVED EYEBALLS-THIS BREED OFTEN SUFFERS GLAUCOMA, VERY COMMONLY, ALSO WITH PEKINGESE DOGS. DID YOU KNOW THAT?
~~~IF YOU DO NOT LIVE IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA-PLEASE, PLEASE CONSIDER CREATING YOUR *OWN* PETITION USING THIS ONE AS A TEMPLATE - YOU MAY USE THE EXACT WORDING (just substitute the word "Florida" to your State :-) TO LET YOUR STATE'S LAW MAKERS ABOUT THIS GREAT IDEA~ IF ENOUGH STATES PASS THIS, SAY BYE BYE TO PUPPY MILLS! Let's get 'er done! :-) ~~~
Please support, co-sponsor and help pass Consumer Protection SB122-written notices of purebred dog/cat genetic disorder propensities-because the public has a RIGHT to know what they are buying and the highly likely result of expensive vet bill problems pure breeds often incur, for this is a consumer protection intervention. This is something like a "lemon law" but pertaining to pure bred companion animals, often running over a thousand dollars PER dog or cat to purchase the pet in stores. (Back yard breeding of dogs and cats IS tax free, and it happens all the time, and multi-million dollar a year industry in a single State alone!)
Most people do NOT research these highly probable future health problems of pure breeds- and buy them because those puppies and kittens are sure cute in the store. A written notification at time of sale is a wake up call to do the necessary research - to protect the customer. The buyer may opt to get an inexpensive DNA cheek swab test (at their own expense) to see if their newly acquired pure breed has such a disease/disorder propensity.
It should also be advised at time of sale to take out pet health insurance due to the horrendous amount of vet bills pure bred dogs and cats often incur.
FL SB 122 is this CONSUMER PROTECTION intervention. Ignorance is NOT bliss, and - often getting consumers into debt paying thousands of dollars on vet bills due to these genetic disease propensities (only the veterinarians and puppy/cat mill industry profit - not the general economy).
Please support, co-sponsor and help pass SB 122: Sale of Dogs and Cats; Requires that additional information relating to the genetic disorders to which dogs and cats are susceptible be included in the written notice that pet dealers provide to a consumer at the time of sale, etc
Many consumers end up buried in vet bills, even going into debt over this. For example: Small-size dogs, or Toy dogs, often suffer their breed specific problems FOR EXAMPLE: Shih Tzu often have several congenital diseases (dogs are born with these diseases) often present patellar luxation (knee joint dislocation), back problems and eye abnormalities-even prone to the eyeball popping out of their socket! Basset Hounds and often get GLAUCOMA requiring removal of the eye or eyes and requires very expensive glaucoma drops. Siamese Cats often get crossed eyed. Rottweilers and Poodles are prone to developing cataracts.
THIS LACK OF AWARENESS DUE TO NO NOTIFICATION DURING PURCHASE-the only people who profit are the veterinarians (charging THOUSANDS of dollars for treatment per animal, taking away from people's resources which means they SPEND LESS on consumer goods adding to the bad economy).
Keep in mind even puppy mills ALL have registrations from the American Kennel Club ("AKC Registered"). This cannot be denied.
Recently the Humane Society of the United States did an expose on PetLand - buying from puppy mills (of course they all were AKC registered dogs).
Thank you for your time and reading and interest for the consumer.
