Fix the Upside-Down Traffic Light

The Issue

The Upside-down traffic light is a unique feature of Syracuse.  It is a symbol of the city’s Irish heritage and our national identity of cultural inclusion.  However, it has come at a cost. People with color blindness cannot tell when they are supposed to stop or go.  If a color blind person sees the bottom red light turn on, they will mistake it for a green light and drive on.  This is bound to cause an accident and lives could be lost.  We should keep our city safe. A color blind person would only have this problem in our city. There is no reason to subject a color blind person to this treatment and allow avoidable deaths to come. We need to replace the upside down traffic light before any harm is caused by it.  The upside down traffic light is an excellent footnote in our city’s history.  But the Troubles are over in Ireland and anti British sentiment has no place in Syracuse.
