Fix the unsafe shared park at Guy Emanuele Elementary in Union City
The Issue
Our community was once united by the vibrant scenes of children laughing and playing at the playground at Guy Emanuele Elementary in Union City. This playground is vital not only to students but also to neighborhood families, providing a safe environment for physical activity and social interaction. Unfortunately, it has recently become a place of concern rather than joy.
The playground equipment, which should be a source of fun, is now a source of fear. Parents and guardians like myself have noticed significant safety issues, particularly with the slide, which has become a clear hazard. Children are avoiding this equipment out of fear. Moreover, the surface beneath the equipment is worn and uneven, posing additional risks of tripping and injuries.
The playground’s bridge structure is currently broken. Rather than being properly repaired, it has been covered with a piece of plywood to prevent use. Unfortunately, this temporary fix has created an even more concerning situation, children are climbing, pushing, and leaning on it, and the board is already beginning to crack. This patch does not solve the problem and introduces a new, immediate safety risk.
According to the National Safety Council, playground injuries send over 200,000 children to emergency rooms every year in the United States. It is crucial that our local playground does not contribute to these statistics.
We understand that the playground is managed by NHUSD, and we strongly urge the school district to prioritize and expedite the renovation. Immediate action is needed, including proper repairs or replacement of broken equipment, leveling surfaces, repainting, and installing adequate safety padding.
Together, as a community, we can restore the playground to a place where creativity, fun, and safety reign supreme. Please sign this petition to urge NHUSD to take prompt action. Let’s protect our children and give them back the safe, welcoming playground they deserve.
