Fix the North Klondike Highway Now: Repair Potholes and Improve Frost Heave Warnings
The Issue
We, the undersigned, are calling on the Yukon Department of Highways and Public Works to take immediate action to repair the North Klondike Highway between Pelly Crossing and Dawson City.
I have personally spoken with the Department about the pothole problem on this stretch of highway and was given the same response that has been heard in previous years: there are not enough staff and not enough money. That answer is no longer acceptable. The road continues to worsen, and drivers continue to face unsafe conditions every day.
There are thousands of potholes along the North Klondike Highway, including some so large they are comparable in size to a small vehicle. This is not only unacceptable, it is dangerous. It puts local residents, commercial drivers, and visitors at risk of vehicle damage and collisions.
We also want to see more warning signs in areas affected by frost heaves. These road hazards can appear suddenly and create serious safety risks, especially in poor weather or low visibility.
The people of the North Klondike deserve safe, reliable roads. This highway is an essential route for communities, emergency access, commerce, and tourism. Yukon drivers should not have to keep accepting unsafe road conditions year after year.
We are demanding:
• Immediate pothole repairs along the North Klondike Highway between Pelly Crossing and Dawson City.
• A clear maintenance plan and timeline for repairs.
• More warning signs in areas with frost heaves.
• Ongoing attention to road safety on this route.
