Fix the Gap: YMCA Summer Care for Preteens Now

Fix the Gap: YMCA Summer Care for Preteens Now
The Issue
Growing up, I have fond memories of the YMCA. It has always been more than just a facility—it's been a cornerstone of my family's life and a hub for connection, health, and community. I want my family to remain a part of this vibrant community for years to come.
However, I’m facing a challenge that many other parents in Pima County, AZ are also experiencing. Once my son ages out of the YMCA’s Learn and Play childcare program, I’ll no longer have access to the support I need to continue using YMCA services—simply because there’s no childcare available for children 8 and older during weekday mornings.
While the YMCA offers a full-day summer camp, it doesn’t meet the needs of parents who require short-term, flexible care. Many families only need care for an hour or two during the day—yet no such option currently exists. This creates a serious gap for families with children who are too old for traditional childcare programs but still too young to be left alone.
We believe the YMCA can help bridge this gap.
We urge the YMCA in Pima County to introduce a flexible, part-time drop-in childcare program for children ages 8–12, available on weekdays from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM and Saturdays 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM during the summer months. This option would support countless families, enabling parents to maintain their wellness routines, stay engaged with the YMCA, and ensure their children are in a safe, enriching environment.
Please support this cause by signing the petition. Let’s show YMCA leadership how important flexible summer childcare is to the families in our community.
