Fix the Broken Traffic Signals at Monterey Country Club
Fix the Broken Traffic Signals at Monterey Country Club
The Issue
The traffic light at our community's only entrances and exits forces 90-second delays, causing our community members to spend too much time waiting for the red lights on Monterey Ave. We demand the City of Palm Desert fix the signal sensors.
To: The City of Palm Desert Public Works & Traffic Engineering Division
From: Residents, Guests, and Families of Monterey Country Club
We need an immediate engineering review and timing adjustment of the traffic signals controlling the ingress and egress onto Monterey Avenue.
The current signal configuration penalizes drivers at this intersection with an excessive, mandatory 90-second wait time—regardless of the time of day, day of the week, or real-time traffic volumes. Even when the main north/south traffic flow on Monterey Avenue has already held the right-of-way for over 90 seconds, traffic turning into or out of our community is forced to sit through an entire fixed cycle.
The system completely fails to respond dynamically to waiting vehicles.
No Alternative Routes for Residents
Crucially, these gates represent the ONLY ways in and out of our community. Residents cannot choose an alternate route to bypass this intersection; we are entirely captive to this malfunctioning traffic pattern every single time we leave or return to our homes.
Severe Impact on Both Incoming and Outgoing Traffic
This systemic failure actively disrupts the entire flow of our community's gates:
* Outgoing Traffic: Drivers exiting the community face gridlock at the gates, waiting through empty cycles while Monterey Avenue traffic faces no opposing flow.
* Incoming Traffic: Drivers attempting to turn left or right into the country club from Monterey Avenue are left stranded in turning lanes for extended periods.
This backs up traffic onto a major high-speed corridor, increasing the risk of rear-end collisions from fast-moving through-traffic.
Years of Inaction Have Created a Major Safety Hazard
This issue has persisted for years. Residents have repeatedly attempted to work through proper city channels, yet no permanent resolution has been implemented.
Out of sheer frustration with these prolonged, unresponsive delays, drivers are now regularly running the red lights—both when exiting and when turning into the community.
This daily gridlock and illegal evasion have created an incredibly hazardous environment, significantly increasing the risk of severe broadside and rear-end collisions on a major artery.
The Solution Requested
We respectfully request that the Palm Desert Traffic Engineering Division update the signal programming to transition from a rigid, pre-timed cycle to a fully actuated system during off-peak hours, or adjust the priority sensors. Once the main flow of Monterey Avenue traffic has enjoyed its minimum green time, the sensor should trigger a minimal-delay phase change for both incoming and outgoing traffic.
Our community deserves a sensor-responsive signal that prioritizes resident safety and prevents avoidable accidents.
