Fix Our Road: NapaNapa-LNG Road

Fix Our Road: NapaNapa-LNG Road

The issue

We, the Residents and Various Businesses owners and Village’ Representatives of the “Baruni-Napanapa/LNG Road” Petition the Government and the Office of the Prime Minister to Address our Grievances and Reduce Local Road Crime Rates, Road Accidents, Local and Business  Vehicle and Transportation Costs by more than 50% By Fixing Our Roads.

To date:

  • Families are held at gun point along this road while trying to avoid bad to worse road conditions. This is now becoming a weekly occurrence. Vehicle owners have been robbed off their vehicles and personal belongings Where is the law and justice in this? These occurrences many times affect women and children, vehicle owners and expatriates working or residing in new establishments like Edai Town, Tuhava, Motukea, and in thriving Businesses and Villages from whence this road lead.
  • Although some maybe genuine; Opportunists claiming to fix potholes poses great risks on everyone, especially the traveling public, and especially when there are escapees still at large. This has contributed to ongoing reports of armed roadblocks or holdups where families (including children) are left stranded on the highway in the middle of the night and, are at the mercy of the traveling public. This has to stop.
  • The constant road blocks by police or Road Traffic Authority where occasionally, vehicle owners who live or work along this road were instructed to fix broken/cracked/or stoned windscreens, headlamps and indicators including worn out tires etc, does not compare to being billed a registration fee of more than K900 per year, yet to drive daily on an unbearable road condition and being a target for criminals.

  • Locals and Businesses are faced with the high cost of vehicle maintenance due to this bad to worse road conditions. In addition, for a road that could have taken 35-45mins to get to town and vice versa now takes up to an hour which means additional costs on fuel is needed on every one way trip.

  • The warded contractor Ingiman Construction Limited has not delivered on its contract. In fact they have added to the deterioration of this road condition by at least another 45%, now the road is most suitable for 4 Wheel Drives only. Cars are barely surviving. Who can answer for this?

  • Unnecessary and or illegal humps as per existing Laws, drawing attention to frequent armed holdups of both businesses and residents within the locality. The governing authority for civil works has failed to deliver as the as per their service act in providing safer better maintained roads; and A road condition such as the road in question “Baruni-Napanapa, LNG Road” displays the incompetencies of office bearers, contract owners, and contract awardees, in this case the Department of Works and Ingiman Contruction Limited.

We kindly ask for a favorable response in this matter that’s costing individuals, households, communities and businesses on this stretch of road thousands upon thousands of Kina which could have other wise be used for education, medical fees and lifestyle improvements.

Please accept our petition as our road not only services this part of Central Province and its people but also is the main supply line of goods and services reaching our country from various regions of the world.
