I am a resident of Killeen, TX, and deeply concerned about the Safety and Traffic on Featherline Road. Featherline Road is a 1.34 mile, two-lane County road interconnecting Stagecoach Road and Chaparral Road. Featherline Road hosts over 1000 Single-Family Homes within Yowell Ranch, two Gas Stations, and a Police Headquarters. It is also the main thoroughfare to access the newly built Chaparral High School and Jimme Don Aycock Middle School. The intersection of Featherline and Chaparral has become increasingly dangerous and no longer supports traffic and safety needs.
In 2014, the City of Killeen reclassified Featherline Road as a Minor Arterial road which required widening the road and other safety improvements (curbs, sidewalks, etc.). Part of this reclassification was contingent on City of Killeen committing to a capital improvement project to improve Featherline Road (pending funding), and in return a local developer would donate a Right-of-Way (Resolution 14-076R). The City of Killeen never improved Featherline Road, and since 2014 the City has approved the development of the Yowell Ranch subdivision, two gas stations, Police HQ, high school, and middle school in the area.
As of today:
- Sec. 26-101(c) of the City of Killeen Code of Ordinances requires a Minor Arterial road to have 48-73 feet of pavement width. Featherline Road, at its widest location, is 31 feet of pavement width.
- There are NO sidewalks or lighting for students to walk to school on Featherline Road.
- In 2018, there was ONE crash on Featherline Road. In 2019, coinciding with Yowell Ranch development, there were 23 crashes involving 38 people. In 2023, upon opening the new High School, there were 32 crashes involving 50 people.
The local community surrounding this area needs your help. Please sign this petition to let your voice be heard to the City of Killeen Staff, Management, Council, and Mayor that we care about the safety of our students, pedestrians, and motorists. We need Featherline Rd. to be funded through Capital Improvement Projects immediately.
Featherline Rd. needs and deserves the improvements it was promised in 2014.
