Fix Downtown Access for Musicians and Night-Time Workers in St. John’s

Music is not just entertainment in Newfoundland and Labrador—it is our culture.

It’s how we tell our stories.

It’s how we celebrate.

It’s how we gather, connect, and make sense of who we are.

From kitchen parties to festival stages, music is woven into everyday life in this province. It always has been.

And beyond culture, music is work. It drives business, fills venues, supports staff, and brings people downtown night after night.

But the people creating that music are being left to figure things out on their own when it comes to something as basic as access.

Right now, getting in and out of downtown St. John’s, especially at night, is a problem.

On busy nights, thousands of people are packed into a small area. There is not enough parking. That’s the reality.

For musicians and others working downtown, that means:

    •    hauling gear long distances

    •    scrambling to find a space before a gig

    •    paying out of pocket just to get to work

    •    or risking tickets, towing, or penalties when there are no reasonable options

There are loading zones, but they are limited and don’t reflect how downtown actually operates at night.

And this doesn’t just affect musicians—it affects bartenders, servers, venue staff, media, and anyone working in the downtown night-time economy.

We need practical solutions that reflect reality.

We are calling on the City of St. John’s and downtown stakeholders to work with the community to:

    •    Expand and extend loading and unloading zones for evening and late-night use

    •    Identify short-term parking options for workers during peak hours

    •    Work with private parking operators to provide accessible options during major events

    •    Include parking and transportation planning in large event coordination

    •    Improve communication and signage around existing options

Why this matters:

If we value music—and everything it brings to this province—then we need to support the people who make it happen.

Right now, people are being penalized for doing their jobs.

That’s not sustainable, and it’s not good enough.

Call to Action:

If you’re a musician, a worker, or someone who values the role music plays in this province, sign and share.

It’s time to fix this in a way that actually works.
