The Issue

Borrell Boulevard has always been more than just a road to me and to many who live in St Marys. This historic thoroughfare connects downtown to midtown shopping, entertainment, and vital health and wellness services. However, the current state of Borrell Boulevard is not only an inconvenience but a significant safety hazard that affects our community deeply.

Even the open part of the street, west of the failed culvert, has deteriorating paving and drainage structures that require attention before they add more perilous conditions, especially during inclement weather.  Such conditions are unacceptable for a road of Borrell Boulevard's significance.

Moreover, the closure of parts of Borrell Boulevard due to deferred maintenance has led to an unsafe traffic diversion onto neighborhood streets. This increases the risk for pedestrians and children playing in these areas and creates congestion and wear on roads not designed for such heavy traffic. It's a community issue that requires urgent attention.

The solution lies in immediate and comprehensive repairs to both the paving and drainage systems on Borrell Boulevard. Resurfacing the road with durable materials, repairing cracks and potholes, and updating the drainage infrastructure to effectively channel stormwater away are crucial steps. Implementing these changes will not only restore Borrell Boulevard as a reliable transit route but also enhance the safety and quality of life for many St Marys residents.

We urge the local government and transportation authorities to secure and allocate the necessary resources and prioritize these repairs. Let us not focus as much on new infrastructure for the people who are not yet residents (see Exit 1 of I95), than on the crumbling infrastructure in the neighborhoods of long term residents. Ensuring safe passage on Borrell Boulevard will benefit everyone who lives, works, and commutes in our area.

Please take action and join us in demanding immediate repairs by signing this petition. Together, we can make Borrell Boulevard safe again.
