Fix America’s Invisible Waterways: Demand Active-Visibility Standards for Channel Markers

Fix America’s Invisible Waterways: Demand Active-Visibility Standards for Channel Markers
The Issue
On March 26, 2026, a fatal accident in Miami’s Meloy Channel highlighted a national crisis: our maritime infrastructure is invisible at night. Currently, federal standards allow for "passive" markers that rely on 19th-century reflective tape. If a piling is broken or the tape is weathered, the marker disappears.
We formally petition the U.S. Coast Guard (under 33 CFR § 1.05-20) to modernize federal Aids to Navigation (ATON) by implementing a new "Active Safety Standard" that mandates:
- Active Illumination: Transitioning from passive tape to smart-illuminated markers visible in all conditions.
- Smart-Sensing Tech: Equipping markers with real-time GPS and impact sensors to alert authorities immediately when a piling is damaged.
- National Safety Audit: Starting in South Florida, a full inspection of all ICW markers to replace broken hazards.
