CORAL REEFS SUFFERING !! NO TO DYNAMITE FISHING

The Issue

Philippine in 1987 study concluded that blast fishing was then very widespread in the Philippines estimating that 25% of all Municipal Fish Landings (equivalent to 250,000 metric tons per year) were from blast fishing. Most of the blast fishing is however done in the South near Palawan and the South China Sea. A study conducted in 2002 reported that destructive fishing methods had caused the degradation of about 177,500etric tons in the 1990's.

What is Dynamite Fishing?

Dynamite Fishing is one of the methods of catching fish. This is an activity using an explosive device that kills many fishes and other creatures under the sea. This is also an illegal practice that is mostly done by people who believe that this is the best way of catching fish. Dynamite Fishing is done not only in the Philippines but in other parts of the world as well.

Is dynamite fishing helpful in the income of fisherman?

Living in an Island that most of us depends on fishing as a source of income does not approve on dynamite or blast fishing. If maybe helpful in some other way, but it is not appropriate to fishing. It is an illegal practice and destructive to nature, the fishes, other habitat that lives underneath the sea and even humans. The coral reefs and other kinds of fishes lives under the ocean is our treasure that human cannot provide but to be taken care of. Promotion to tourism is one of the advantage for not using blast fishing. These natural treasure, the sea and its natural habitat gives us life.

In the Republic Act No. 10654 an act to prevent, deter, and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, amending Republic Act No. 8550. Otherwise known as "The Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998". And for other purposes, to ensure the national and sustainable development, management and conversation of the fishery and aquatic resources in Philippine waters including the Exclusive Economic Zone(EEZ) and in the adjacent high seas, consistent with the primordial objective of maintaining a sound ecological balance, protecting and enhancing the quality of the environment.

The Philippines shall pursue its commitment to international convention and cooperate with other states and international bodies, in order to conserve and manage threatened aquatic species, straddling and highly migratory fish stocks and other living marine resources.

I therefore, conclude that promotion to stop dynamite fishing is a better and helpful way to our nature and humans life. We discourage our fishermen in our Island from using illegal and destructive methods in fishing and hopefully remind everyone that the sea and its inhabitants are gifts from God that deserves to be treasured and taken care of. Let us help each other to preserve that nature of our sea and help those who are in needs like fishermen that no other sources of income than fishing. Let's spread the idea to no dynamite fishing, no to illegal fishing. Thank you.
