1400 seals are dying each year in Australia each year due to fishing nets and wire getting caught around their bodies. This is awful and preventable - we need to make a change to the way we fish our seas. If we continue to leave fishing wire and nets in our waters, humans will be responsible for the extinction of these beautiful creatures forever.

Why are seals important in our ecosystem?

There are three main reasons why seals are important.Seals help maintain and balance the food web and ocean habitat. They stop other species from over populating the ocean by eating them as part of their diet. These species include shrimp , calamari and other small fish. Through their movements, seals help move the nutrients in the water to keep oceans balanced. If we keep harming and killing seals this will have a dramatic negative impact to the health of our oceans.

How is fishing harming seals?

When fishermen fish commercially they leave their fishing wire and nets floating in the seas and oceans and this waste gets caught around the seals bodies. It chokes and cuts the seals skin leaving them to suffer and die. I personally find this really sad that seals are dying  from human actions. Its not  fair that us selfish humans leave our mess in the waters because were too lazy to clean it up.So many more different animal species  are becoming extinct and we wouldn’t want another amazing specie to be added to the list. It’s estimated that 100,000 marine animals die each year due to this problem, including seals.

46% of the oceans plastic is fishing nets! This is a huge problem and still Thousands of miles and tons of derelict ropes and fishing nets  lie in our oceans potentially harming thousands of marine wildlife in the future.

What can you do to help?

There are already heaps of awesome volunteers out there who catch the seals and untangle rope and wires from their bodies . But you can help by picking up waste on our beaches and disposing of it responsibly.
Sign my petition to make fishermen legally responsible for cleaning up after themselves in the ocean. Everyone needs to be responsible of their own waste and look after our environment !
