REPLACE PLASTIC WITH WHEATSTRAW AND BAMBOO TOYS, LUNCHBOXES, CUPS, TUPPERWARE, STATIONNERY

The Issue

We dont want plastics any more.  Plastic is filling our oceans and landfill sites and killing marine life.  Plastics are leaching toxins into the environment such as BPA and phthalates.  BPA plastics are already banned from toys and baby products after consumer concerns.

Plastic is a petroleum product with high carbon emission, pollutant and contribute to environment damage and climate change. We don't want products made out of materials which harm the environment we live in and damage our health.

There are already bright and colourful and amazing and wonderful wheatstraw and bamboo cups, mugs and lunchboxes for sale on amazon and trouva in lovely pastel colours with colourful prints.  They are not only lovely to look at they are also just as good as plastic.   Even lego are making sugar cane lego pieces.

"The first Lego pieces made from plant-based plastic sourced from sugar cane will go on sale this year, the company has announced. The move is part of Lego’s commitment to use more sustainable materials in its core products - including its eponymous bricks - and packaging by 2030. Its aim is to find sustainable sources to replace its current fossil fuel-based raw materials, as plastic can also be made from sustainable or bio-based raw materials." Guardian

Wheatstraw is value for money for both manufacturers, retailers and customers. Here is why:

Wheat Straw is free

Wheat Straw is renewable resource

Wheatstraw is also biodegradable and compostable.

worldcentric make wheatstraw products. This is what they say:

Wheat straw is the stalk left over after wheat grains are harvested.Traditionally, it has been treated as a waste. By using wheat straw in our products, we are diverting material from the waste stream and using a reclaimed resource. In some countries, farmers burn it, contributing to air pollution and creating a public health hazard.

About 144 million tonnes accumulate of wheatstraw each year according to Bernard Chaud, director of industrial strategy at Global Bioenergies, in France

We know that forests are threatened and endangered around the world, so it is important to us to find alternative materials

Wheatstraw is cheap to purchase and has low manufacturing costs.  Here is why:

Protects forests: While 5 tons of wood are needed to produce 1 ton of pulp for paper, only 1.5 tons of straw are needed to produce the same amount.

Less energy: Heavy-duty industrial processes are required to turn wood into paper. A wood pulp mill costs 5 times as much as a straw pulp plant, and it uses 10 times the energy.3

Renewable and sustainable: Unlike virgin forests, which are endangered by human “harvesting,” agricultural waste will be readily available as long as humanity engages in agriculture.

Here is the worldcentric description of wheatstraw's quality:

Benefits of Wheat Straw Food Service Products

Sturdy and strong
Microwave and freezer safe
Handle hot liquids up to 200 Fahrenheit
Conform to US Food & Drug Administration guidelines
Non-allergenic and gluten-free
Fully compostable through home and commercial composting (composts completely in commercial facilities in 1-2 months)1
Fully compostable at home within 6 months (though not certified for home composing)1

Worldcentric make Wheat Straw products.  this is what they say:

Hundreds of different fibrous plants can be manufactured into alternatives to tree-based paper products, most notably wheat, rice, hemp, flax, and sugar cane. In many agricultural processes, straw is treated merely as the agricultural waste that remains after grain or juice is extracted from crops. For World Centric®, straw is a valuable resource that can be fashioned into disposable products like plates, take out containers, bowls etc.

There is also bamboo materials.  Waitrose has started selling bamboo toothbrushes so has other retailers which stock brands such as Humble Brush and Preserve which Bcorp certified.

The newspaper say:

Because bamboo is fast-growing and can be cultivated without pesticides.

A rare exception is the Humble Brush, which UK supermarket Waitrose started selling at the beginning of the year. In addition to its environmental credentials (the handle is made from FSC-certified bamboo), the product’s Swedish manufacturer pledges to donate a free brush or the cost-equivalent in oral care for children living in vulnerable countries.

“The production of plastic toothbrushes produces toxins and leaves a carbon footprint. But more importantly, they never biodegrade,” says Noel Abdayem, a qualified dentist and founder of Humble Brush.
