FISD Rezoning: advocating for our kids/keeping our neighborhoods together

The Issue

What is the rezone and why should we be concerned?

  • With the new high school, Panther Creek High, opening next fall, attendance zones for 22-23 school year will be changed.
    • Eldorado Fairways, Country Club Ridge, and the Fairways may be part of the rezoning.
  • Rezoning negatively impacts the emotional well being of our children
    • Rezoned high schoolers will be separated from teacher and friend relationships which would affect mental health, college recommendations, coaching, opportunities for leadership, activity involvement and much more
    • All students rezoned from their current peers will suffer from broken relationships and loss of their support system which can have long term effects on their emotional health and academic success
    • Frisco ISD recognizes that "meaningful relationships have profound lifelong impact" so should be aware that damaging these relationships will also have major impacts
  • Current US News rankings place Wakeland as #1 of 9 in FISD
    • Families moved into the Wakeland zone specifically to attend this top rated high school
    • Rezoning may result in a large withdrawal from FISD due to school choice
    • Our students will be further disrupted by any major changes to the neighborhood or withdrawal of their friends from public school
    • Our students and neighborhoods identify strongly with Griffin and Wakeland due to years of sibling relationships, team support and community involvement

By signing this position, we are asking that FISD:

  • Ask FISD to consider all rezoning alternatives and focus on minimizing the impact on all students. We do not believe rezoning Wakeland is the best option.
    • We ask FISD to look at Frisco High School to resolve the overcrowding at Reedy. Frisco High School currently has approximately 500 less students than Wakeland.
    • We ask FISD older, established neighborhoods like ours not be asked to rezone; limit students moved to those in new, developing areas that are directly impacted by overcrowding.
  • Ask that any rezonings that do occur take into account long-term relationships of students in those areas and focus on keeping elementary and middle school zones intact as they move into high school.
  • Ask that current high schoolers not be required to move to another existing high school in order to provide stability in their high school experience, which for their age group has already been significantly impacted by the pandemic.
