#FIREDrRuth Marshall - Petition by Mark Slapinski
The Issue
Dr. Ruth Marshall, an influential political science professor at the University of Toronto, was observed advocating for violence on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
On Wed. Sep. 10, Marshall wrote to her X followers: "Shooting is honestly too good for you fascist c*nts."
The tweet immediately led to backlash, which resulted in condemnation from the premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, and led to an article by the Toronto Sun.
Premier Ford called Dr. Marshall's comments "disgusting," while Toronto Sun journalist Joe Warmington referred to them as "creepy."
Dr. Marshall's comments were later reported by the CBC, and other established news outlets.
Dr. Marshall claims that her comment was not made in reference to Charlie Kirk's assassination in Utah, rather "atrocity denial in Gaza."
However, Dr. Marshall's defence is contradicted by the fact that her comment was in response to an X post referencing videos of Kirk being shot being passed around social media.
Dr. Marshall has since locked her X account, and hasn't provided any further clarification or defence to the media.
What is particularly concerning is this was not the first time Dr. Marshall has called for violence or made disparaging remarks against people she disagrees with politically.
Last month, Dr. Marshall made a comment on X suggesting that podcaster Jesse Singal should commit suicide.
Prior to that, Dr. Marshall made several comments undermining the atrocities committed in Israel by Hamas, as was documented by David Lange of the blog Israelly Cool.
This summer, Dr. Marshall advocating for using guillotines on rich people, as was reported by journalist Rupa Subramanya.
Previously, Dr. Marshall advocated for violence against me for my public support of Alberta premier Danielle Smith.
Last year, Dr. Marshall was accused of harassing independent journalist Adam Lee Wasserman (an associate of lawyer and media personality Caryma Sa'd) on University of Toronto property.
This demonstrates a pattern of anti-social behaviour that is unbecoming of a professor at a prestigious university.
Any reasonable person would have foreseen that posting comments about shooting 'fascists' in the immediate aftermath of Kirk's assassination would be interpreted negatively by those that support him, and were grieving his loss.
Dr. Marshall, in my opinion and that of many others, appears to be mentally ill and morally bankrupt. She is clearly not someone who should be trusted to be alone in a room with young people, let alone teach them in any capacity.
Parents are rightfully concerned about sending their kids to a school with such unstable people representing their brand.
While the University of Toronto has already placed her on leave, this petition demands she be fired, and permanently banned from teaching at another University in Canada or the United States.
