Fire USMMA Superintendent Joanna Nunan

Fire USMMA Superintendent Joanna Nunan
The Issue
This petition calls for the resignation or removal of U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Superintendent Joanna Nunan immediately for reported violations of constitutional rights and religious freedoms of midshipmen. Also, for not taking action to protect the health and well-being of midshipmen.
* Nunan altered, covered, and then put in a flooded, humid basement the historic heritage asset painting Christ on the Water (at taxpayer expense). She displayed anti-Christian bias because she kept displays of other religions and ideologies on display in prominent locations. She bowed to Mikey Weinstein's demands to remove the painting. He is an anti-Christian zealot who called USMMA Midshipmen "Christian nationalist insects."
* In a speech in Jan. 2023, Nunan claimed the covering of the painting was "a matter of principle" and a "political compromise." She promised the midshipmen the painting would stay (covered) in the Elliot See room and said, "it's not going anywhere, not for a million dollars." Shortly after her speech, she removed it and put it in the basement.
* Despite the Defense Department rescinding the COVID vaccine mandate on Jan. 10, 2023, Nunan reportedly kept the mandate in place at USMMA until March 10, 2023. The application deadline for the 2023–24 school year was March 1, 2023, so her extension of the mandate required all those applicants to be vaccinated.
* Nunan appointed Anton Tripolskii as the sexual assault response director of USMMA at a salary of $143,000 per year. Tripolskii posted bigoted, anti-Christian social media rants. He exclaimed, “We don’t have forces who do right by survivors of intimate partner and sexual violence because we don’t have forces who don’t abuse Brown and Black people. Same forces, same reasons. Misogyny and racism grow from the same white, male root.” He also posted a picture on Twitter depicting a church being closed and blocked by the police. His caption was, “This is my heaven.” He also retweeted a post that read “let that be a lesson to anyone who dares to challenge the great Satan” and advocated for defunding the police. Tripolskii remains in the position even after Senators sent her a letter with their concerns.
* Nunan enacted a policy that allowed military service exemptions for midshipmen pursuing a gender transition.
* Under Nunan's leadership, infrastructure continued to crumble. Midshipmen often didn't have hot water, there are mold problems, and water tested positive for legionella bacteria.
