The Issue

Student morale at Jack E. Singley Academy has reached an all-time low. An increasing number of students and teachers are transferring to other schools, including out-of-district schools in Euless and online school programs. Many students believe this decline is directly connected to the actions and leadership style of Principal Brandi Johnson.

Students feel ignored and dismissed. Emails raising concerns are often unanswered or brushed off, leaving students with no choice but to turn to this petition in hopes of meaningful change.

Key Issues:

Unnecessary restrictions on senior traditions: Senior-out periods and even the senior trip to Pinstack now require completion of the TSIA2, a college-readiness exam meant for Texas public colleges. This unfairly excludes students who never took the test in the first place because it was voluntary and they missed the sign-up, or those not attending college at all and choosing not to take it as a result. All seniors should be celebrated, not just certain ones. The TSIA Is not required for senior-outs at other district schools.

Locked restrooms: Since August 2024, half of the school’s restrooms have remained locked “until further notice.” During testing, non-testing students on the first floor where testing takes place, are denied restroom access even during lunch, causing students to go to the second floor to use the restroom. Students who are in the other side of the hallway are forced to walk three minutes to use the restroom when it could've taken a minute or less. For content-heavy classes like AP Calculus, you can't afford to miss out on class.

Harsh tardy policies: All late students are treated as skippers, regardless of circumstances such as car trouble or restroom access issues. Students arriving late with breakfast bought at a fast food place have their food thrown away, and at least one student was sent to in-school suspension for refusing to comply, though it was his second offense. As a result of the tardy policy, many classrooms have long lines of students waiting to use the restroom because they refuse to get marked tardy. Teachers don't help, instead posting signs on their doors demanding students have a tardy pass.

Student safety during bad weather (SOLVED): During freezing and rainy conditions, students—especially bus riders—are forced to wait outside in long metal detector lines. When it was less than 20 degrees outside in February 2025, nearby schools in other districts opened early to allow students indoors. This school did not.

Inconsistent Yondr unlocking stations (SOLVED): Fire drills at the end of the day and missing unlocking stations have caused students to miss buses or be unable to unlock their phones at all without having to quickly go to another floor to unlock their phones. When this happens, rather than bringing the stations to the second floor where bus riders exit through, they just... don't.

Dismissive and authoritarian leadership: A junior pep rally was abruptly canceled due to the actions of a few bad actors connecting to Bluetooth speakers, making the organizers, Spirit Crew, feel frustrated as this rally was never rescheduled. Students who write long, passionate emails to Mrs. Johnson in hope of change are told to meet her in-person rather than her replying to the email. She previously used to call teachers, with those teachers having to say "[Name], Mrs. Johnson wants you in her office," making it sound as you did something bad in front of the class.

Switching teachers: In 2024, Mrs. Johnson switched teachers to teach other subjects. For example, the AP Environmental teacher, Mrs. Perry, who was liked by students, was replaced by two teachers who had never taught the subject before and didn't have any relevant experience in it, causing many students to have little confidence in themselves for the AP exam. Mrs. Perry herself is now teaching another science subject, but there was no need to make this change. Mrs. Johnson also made another beloved teacher, Mr. Goodall, choose between his coaching job at Irving High School and his business class at Singley with no option to continue doing both. He left.

Strange language: When students suggested hosting a drive-in night to fundraise, Mrs. Johnson allegedly vetoed the idea because she thought that teenagers would have sex in their cars. For a woman in her 30s/40s to think this of teenagers is incredibly inappropriate. We had a regular movie night instead.

Uncommitted to the school: In a meeting between club officers, Mrs. Johnson said she refused to stay after-school because she had a family in a city nearly 30 minutes away. If this is an issue, she should work in a closer district.

These policies have created a school environment where students and teachers feel undervalued and discouraged. Leadership should support students, not drive them away. We respectfully call for immediate administrative change to restore fairness, communication, and student morale at Jack E. Singley Academy.

Update: Mrs. Johnson is now calling up students to her office to ask them why they signed this petition in what I believe is a form of intimidation. If she really does want to get feedback, she should make a Google Form where we can request feedback to both her leadership style and what could be done to make the school a better environment, not confront students individually for wanting a better school environment.
