Fire Northview High School Principal Dr. Leo Magallon and Vice Principal Marissa Baker.

The Issue

Community members,

As some of you might have noticed, there have been ongoing protests outside of Northview High School by parents and students. As concerned parents, we are demanding answers on the recent incidents that have been brought to our attention. Students are being intimidated and threatened by Principal Leo Magallon and Vice Principal Marissa Baker, for voicing themselves and bringing awareness to the injustices occurring on a daily basis on Northview’s school premises.

This all transpired after a long-term substitute teacher was terminated for speaking up against the way a student medical emergency was handled with complete negligence and improper protocol. Principal Leo did not call the paramedics for a student who suffered a seizure and failed to notify the student’s mother about her child’s incident in a timely manner.  He felt the need to search the student’s backpack and accused the student of being “under the influence”. There is proof to this and the mother is willing to share this for the sake of your own child’s safety.

Leo Magallon has recently sent notices to parents about student “safety” being a priority in efforts to cover up the malpractices and unethical actions taken by him and his colleagues like Vice Principal Marissa Baker and Northview’s nurse. In addition, students are being threatened to get kicked off of sport teams, academic programs like AVID, cheerleading, and any other extra curricular activity that is beneficial to them, for speaking up on what is currently going on.  This is a complete violation of your child’s rights and they are being harassed for speaking their truth. As parents, we need to protect our children from being threatened for simply bringing awareness to us.

In recent weeks, students reached out to Principal Leo in regards to a sexual assault. His response to them was “let this be a life lesson” and they were once again silenced.  It has also been brought to our attention that Leo made a comment about Northview being the “ghetto school” in the district and he justified  his comment by claiming, “I am from east LA Boyle Heights so I can say that”.  This was said to the entire student body at their disciplinary rally and is also recorded by students.  This is unacceptable and unprofessional behavior.  Many of us parents are alumnis and/or have children who have graduated from Northview High School. We take pride in our school and need to stop this new principal and vice principal from ruining our reputation and quality of learning for students. Classes that are getting funding for teachers, are being babysat by coaches used as substitutes.  They are providing little to no lesson planning for your children, while those substitutes who are creating lesson plans are being underpaid and suppressed for standing up for the students.

We ask you to support our peaceful approach on this matter and know that we are protecting our children from intimidation and violation of their rights.  We have received no answers from Covina-Valley Unified School District and Northview Administration needs to be investigated and held accountable for their misconduct. For now, we need to raise awareness and collaborate together.  Ask your children how things are at school. Who are their teachers? What are they learning? Are they able to use the bathroom in peace?  They deserve to be listened to, for they are our future and their voices do matter.

We are making sure that students make it to class on time and only protest before and after school. We want our children to be heard.  We have the best interest for the students and this is why we need to inform you about the hostile environment that Northview’s Administration is normalizing. Rest assured that there will be no interference with your child’s school work, as that will continue being a top priority. Please join us, join your children, and support the cause.
