I say this with a passion to serve justice to my peers and others who have had horrible experiences with Ms. Shelden, a teacher at Hamilton High School, Arizona. First off, I would like to introduce this situation with my personal experience. During a class session, I had what felt like a bathroom emergency and it was urgent for me to visit the restroom. Despite explaining this to her, Ms. Shelden denied me the permission I needed. What was her reasoning? She was still instructing a session that had already gone over 40 endless minutes, during which I could not continue to wait. This isn’t just an isolated incident. Ms. Shelden's behavior reflects a broader pattern of misconduct and disrespect towards her students. She has a reputation for being rude and racist . An example of her insensitivity is the way she would refer to a Hispanic individual as “Jesús,” even though that was not his name. Moreover, her actions are often demeaning when students ask for help with assignments, making us feel belittled and stupid rather than encouraged to learn and grow. Not only does she act this way with students, she also displayed these traits with her own coworker. A co-teacher I looked up to and considered a positive force in the classroom was herself subject to Ms. Shelden's unwarranted rudeness and unprofessionalism. Education should be an environment of support, encouragement, and mutual respect. The importance of having empathetic and respectful educators cannot be overstated. Our school, Hamilton High, deserves teachers who foster an inclusive, respectful, and supportive learning environment for all students, free from prejudice and hostility. Ms. Shelden's continued presence at our school undermines these fundamental values. I urge the Hamilton High School administration to take immediate action by considering the dismissal of Ms. Shelden. Her actions do not align with the values and standards necessary for educating and nurturing our future generations.
