The Issue

A gang rape involving seven men at Cornell University occurred, using a public chat to invite fraternity alum to "free pussy," and it has taken two long years for the details of this case to come to light. This delay in transparency only became possible due to Jane Doe's lawsuit, shining a spotlight on an issue that was in danger of being buried indefinitely. I am deeply troubled and angered by the lack of accountability and transparency from Cornell University's authorities.

The punishment these seven men received—a mere essay—is not just insufficient; it's a slap in the face to those who believe in justice and the safety of all students. How can an institution of Cornell’s reputation deem an essay as adequate retribution for such grave actions? This lenient 'punishment' underlines a systemic failure to protect and stand by victims and yet again, powerful individuals are allowed to skirt consequences while victims remain unheard and invisible.

The university's administration, including the Board of Regents, the President, and all high-level decision-makers, are responsible for this cover-up. They failed to act, to punish adequately, or even to bring the details of such a matter promptly to light. Instead, they chose silence over honesty, and complacency over action.

In an environment that should prioritize education, safety, and integrity, how can we trust those in power when they choose to shelter the guilty rather than champion transparency and justice? These leaders must be held accountable for their inaction and complicity.

We demand that Cornell University undertake a thorough investigation and immediately dismiss those who failed to uphold the university's values and duties: the Board of Regents, the President, and any other high-level administrators involved. Furthermore, policies must be strengthened to ensure complete transparency and accountability in managing such incidents in the future.

Stand with us in demanding justice and accountability from those in power. By signing this petition, you are adding your voice to the call for a safer and more transparent academic environment—one where integrity is upheld, and justice is duly served.
