I’ve witnessed too many dog owners walking their pets in extreme temperatures, specifically when it's over 30°C. It breaks my heart to see these animals suffering when it can be easily avoided. Many people don’t realise that if the air temperature is 30°C, the pavement can be much hotter. This can lead to severe paw burns and even heatstroke, which can be fatal for dogs.

Dogs are incredibly vulnerable to high temperatures. Unlike humans, they have limited means to cool down, as they can only sweat through their nose and the pads of their feet. When dog owners take them out in the heat, the potential for heat exhaustion or heatstroke increases significantly. In fact, according to veterinary experts, it only takes a few minutes for a dog to suffer the effects of the heat, which can result in a rapid rise in body temperature, leading to organ failure or death.

We must call for accountability and create a safer environment for our beloved pets. I propose implementing a £100 fine for people who choose to walk their dogs in temperatures exceeding 30°C. This penalty will not only serve as a deterrent but will also raise awareness about the dangers of extreme heat for dogs.

Municipalities in our area should have clear guidelines and enforcement measures, ensuring that dog owners think twice before putting their pets at risk. Public service announcements and informational campaigns about the impact of heat on dogs should also be funded and implemented.
