In the peaceful community of Stevens Point, WI, our neighborhood has always been a safe haven for our children. As a parent, watching my children and their friends play freely in our yards has been a source of joy and pride. However, a recent decision threatens the very essence of this safety and peace. The Wisconsin Department of Corrections (WDOC) and ATTIC transitional housing is proposed to be established at 1729 Church St, right in the heart of our family-friendly community.

What is most concerning is that we, the residents of this neighborhood, were not given prior notice or an opportunity to voice our concerns about this development. Such an important decision should never have bypassed the voices of those it impacts the most: the families and homeowners who have chosen this area for its safety and community spirit.

Introducing transitional housing in this area poses several significant issues. Firstly, it increases security risks and impacts the freedom of our children. The thought of our children being confined to play within strict boundaries out of fear contradicts the childhood experiences we wish for them. Secondly, the constant vigilance required from us as residents infringes on our rights to privacy and peace of mind.

Moreover, studies have consistently shown that property values can decrease by up to 12% with the introduction of facilities such as transitional housing in close proximity. This is not just a statistic—it's a stark reality that affects our home investments and, by extension, our futures.

We urge the WDOC/ATTIC  program, Portage County, and other relevant authorities to reconsider the placement of this facility. Let’s work together to find a more suitable location that does not jeopardize our community’s integrity or the safety of our children.
