The Issue

Since the dawn of time, names have played a vital role in our identities. They are not merely labels but extensions of who we are. As an Asian individual, my chosen name, Tofu, bears personal and cultural significance. However, I find myself in a situation where a friend refuses to use it. While to some this might appear insignificant, I view it as a broader struggle for respect and acknowledgment that many minorities face regarding their identities.

The history of minorities fighting for the respect of their chosen identities is long and fraught with challenges. Being called by a name that truly represents us is a fundamental right. It is not just about me but about acknowledging the broader principle that everyone deserves to be recognized by a name that resonates with the color of their skin (or lack their of).

My friend's refusal to call me Tofu is not just a minor inconvenience but a reflection of a need for greater awareness and acceptance.

I petition for my friend to take a moment to reflect on the importance of names and identity. To my friend: I kindly ask you to give up and call me Tofu :)
