Fight for Justice: The Assault & Killing of Felita Bailey

Fight for Justice: The Assault & Killing of Felita Bailey
The Issue
On August 31, 2024, 25-year-old Felita Bailey was killed during an after party on 1300 block of Avondale in Amarillo TX, where a fight erupted inside and the altercation spilled into the street and gunshots followed. In the year since, the public narrative has shifted while Felita’s family and community have consistently said she was physically assaulted, with video footage surfacing, before the shooting and that multiple people bear responsibility.
Even with a murder arrest, there has been no clear public accounting for the individuals who physically attacked Felita during the fight preceding the gunfire. Days after the shooting, police arrested a white male 22-year-old Dylan Black. Months later, authorities publicly stated Black was “eliminated” as a suspect in Felita’s killing even with witnesses statements identifying him as the alleged shooter.
On March 14, 2025, U.S. Marshals arrested 20 year old Merron Kanye Bailey, her cousin, on a murder warrant in Felita’s case; he was later booked into Potter County Jail. Witness stated that Merron did not have a weapon and video evidence shows him leaving the party prior to the shooting. Assaults that directly endanger someone’s life especially those immediately preceding a homicide must be investigated and charged on their own merits.
We are calling for a thorough, transparent investigation into every assault and participant connected to that night, and prosecution of all suspects who attacked Felita. Felita’s family has repeatedly pleaded for updates, legal support, and transparency, highlighting gaps between what witnesses say happened and what the public has been told.
