Fight for Fred R Miller, UDT 22 (Class 33E) / SEAL Team 2, to be Made Whole by Museum

The Issue

Fred R Miller, UDT 22 (Class 33E) / SEAL Team 2, is an 80-year-old 100% disabled combat-wounded Vietnam Veteran, who assisted in the establishment of a nationally recognized military museum intended to be a sanctuary for Veterans at its inception. By expertly curating a collection of firearms and knives to convey the history of the US Navy SEAL from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, Fred was able to provide a professional weapons display for the museum's opening in 1985. At that time, the President of the museum association wrote, “without the loan of your personal collection, the museum would be virtually devoid of weapons”.

Fred wrote to the museum at least three times and indicated he did not wish to renew the loan, but he would like to arrange for the return of his loaned property. When Mr. Miller’s letters went unanswered, he began requesting the return of his loaned property in person. He spoke with multiple members of the museum board and staff, and often was told that they would look into it, but if any follow through occurred it was never communicated to Fred.

"I've always been curious why they believe they have the right to retain my property, and I've never been advised." -Fred (Class 33E)

In 2019, several of Fred’s firearms and knives were on display and showed significant deterioration and alteration from their originally loaned condition and configuration. Again, Fred, requested the return of his personal property in person at the museum. Ultimately, that conversation ended with “if you don’t like it, get a lawyer.”

Despite trying to retrieve his things from the museum directly and discreetly, Fred, in an attempt to persuade the museum to engage in meaningful conversation about the return of his loaned property, filed a lawsuit. Now, multiple years later, Fred’s property still has not been returned and legal fees incurred. Because none of this had to happen, we demand that the museum make Fred whole by:

  1. Returning everything listed on the Receipt for Loans, in the condition in which he loaned it.
  2. If any of Fred's loaned property is missing, broken, or cannibalized, compensate Fred for the loss.
  3. If Fred's property is missing, broken, or cannibalized compensate Fred for the lack of care of his property while in the museum's possession.
  4. Reimburse Fred for all legal fees, including travel to meditation, deposition, and viewing.

Because, again, NONE of this had to happen.
