The FINAL RACE RESULTS CLASSIFICATION SHOULD THEREFORE BE TAKEN BACK ONE LAP BEFORE THE SAFETY CAR CAME IN AND LEWIS SHOULD HAVE WON THE RACE AND CHAMPIONSHIP.

The 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 12th December 2021,
Lewis Hamilton was leading the whole race about to win the championship then a crash occurred with 5 laps to go and the safety car was deployed to slow the cars while the crash was cleared. The race Director Michael Massi has the discretion to control when the safety comes in, but has to follow the written rules. Also note, on other occasions he has said he is a fan of Max Verstappen.

He broke the rules at his discretion to

1. The rules state if you allow lapped cars to over take the safety car, the safety car should then come in at the end of the following lap according to article 48.12 of the regulations. He did this on the same lap and only the cars in between Max and Lewis not the whole field. This procedure has never happened before.

2. If he wanted the safety car to come in on the lap he wanted to give one lap of racing, the only way was to not let the lapped cars to over take, which is optional. Again this was at his discretion. If this had happened there would have been 5 cars between Max and Lewis and unlikely Max could over take Lewis.

During this process Red Bull team was on the radio to Massi, heckling him to make sure the race restarted and the lapped cars were out of the way. As initially a note came up from race control that the lapped cars would not overtake before the safety car came in. Then he changed his mind after this heckling.

3. Mercedes, were following the rules and therefore the gap to Max would not allow Lewis to pit for new tyres and still retain the lead when the safety car was first deployed, and knowing the procedure they would have expected there to not be enough laps left for the safety car to come in before the end of the race so the positions would have stayed as they were with Lewis in the lead and Max the 6th car back behind lapped cars.

Had Mercedes known Massi was going to definitely restart the race for 1 lap and not follow the rules they would have pitted Lewis to given him a Fair race between Max on the same tyres.

The whole world was in shock about this result and Mercedes appealed the results according to the rules but surprise surprise the FIA stewards who make the rules, said it was at the race directors "Michael Massi" (a Max fan) to do as he wanted with the safety car and overrule the rules.

The bottom line is if the whole world championship comes down to one man's discretion this is not right, especially if he is not impartial.

This would never have happened with the previous race director Charlie Whiting who always stuck to the rules.
