Feeding and Shelter Program for Stray Dogs and Cats in Barangay Sungay West, Tagaytay City

Feeding and Shelter Program for Stray Dogs and Cats in Barangay Sungay West, Tagaytay City
The Issue
As we walk outside our houses we are exposed to different problems in our society, one of these problems are stray animals. Stray animals are animals that just roam around the streets of either a city or a suburb. Over time they increased in population, this led to different consequences such as problems in waste and in rabies cases. There are instances that they rummage through and search for food in our garbage, their feces and urines are also affecting the sanitation of our community. Moreover, as stated in Bohol Chronicle in our country we have an average of 300-600 dog bites every year. About 82% of these bites are caused by stray dogs. These bites can directly impact the health of an individual, commonly the problem associated with pet bite is rabies which is a serious health issue because it can lead to death. These elucidates that stray dogs create concern in the society not only in waste but also in health.
Therefore our group decided to be involved with this problem. Since we cannot terminate these stray animals easily not only because of the Animal Welfare Act (Republic Act No. 10631) but also, they are living things that deserve to live. Our group will propose a petition wherein it will not only benefit us humans but as well as the animals. The advocacy of our group is about building a shelter for stray animals, wherein they will be given the proper treatment, especially their food. It will also involve different initiatives. This will help to build a society not only human-focused but also extending its love and care to animals. But specific actions are needed to conduct.
This project primarily plans to establish a sanctuary for homeless dogs and cats from Sungay West, Tagaytay City, where various initiatives such as Feeding Programs and Neutering and Spaying Program are offered. The mentioned sanctuary is envisioned to be constructed in any available huge lot in the barangay, structurally consisting of divisions, allotting a space for each Pawtunate ones, to be able to help attain our objectives to assist stray dogs and cats, ensure their wellness, protection, and sanitation, and also to preclude dog and cat brutality. Moreover, in relation to this, the programs: feeding programs ensure that their bodies get the nutrients they require and prevent them from suffering from malnutrition; and a neutering and spaying program which will help stop the increasing number of stray animals by stopping its ability to reproduce. The neutering and spaying program will also help protect them against certain illnesses.
The team also intend to promote stray animal adoption with regards to the arising concern in animal cruelty and euthanasia. Our goals are to provide weatherproof, security, prevention of multiplying unwanted animals and a barrier against illness and poor health for cats and dogs. This proposal can be beneficial to the citizens of Sungay West, Tagaytay City and the people in the surrounding area, providing a sustainable solution to pet homelessness, help prevent rabies, and depopulate the strays that are mostly abused, starved, neglected, abandoned and killed which is commonly acquired from homeless dogs and cats. Locals can also acquire some of these animals to their homes. With their short-lived life, it is important to us that we can provide them the necessities, care, and love that they truly deserve.
There is no question that providing a sanctuary for stray animals is expensive and demands a large amount of money. Money is a big issue for this study, especially because the team is still students. This project requires financial support and assistance from sponsors and a loaned budget of the team. The shelter will be constructed using the originated budget of our admins which is strictly lent for the establishment of the facility. Additionally, other essentials for the dogs and cats such as medicines, and vitamins are needed to maintain the animals’ health. In order to make this project possible, we will reach out and coordinate with barangay officials and city administration in acquiring a permit needed to build the shelter.
The sponsors of this project can freely choose in the given selection on what they want to contribute; foods, disinfectants and toiletries, equipment, and building utilities. Contracts will be used for certainty of the sponsor and legitimacy of our project. For the Neutering Project, which will be provided to both cats and dogs, the assistance of the veterinarians will also be required. All available funding and resources will be given to take care of the pets.
