Replace Andrew Jackson—Slave Owner—with George Floyd on $20 Bill

The Issue

New $20 in 2020

The U.S. $20 bill features the portrait of slave-owner Andrew Jackson, 7th President of the United States of America. Jackson was in office almost 200 years ago, between 1829–1837, a period of antiquated values that engendered now-illegal policies and laws.

This Petition's Agenda

This petition requests that the U.S. Federal Reserve and other relevant governing bodies immediately begin the process of phasing out this racist artifact and replacing it with a new $20 bill depicting the image of George Floyd—an unarmed black man—who was choked to death by a police officer during an arrest in 2020. This act of police brutality, resulting in murder, occurred because Mr. Floyd allegedly attempted to make a purchase using a counterfeit $20 bill.

His life was worth $20.

A Slave Economy

President Andrew Jackson bought and sold slaves. He owned approximately 1000 acres of cotton plantations which were serviced by hundreds of slaves. Furthermore, under Jackson's administration, the Indian Removal Act drove Native Americans from their land in the Deep South. This event is known as "The Trail of Tears."

Jackson is not the only slave-owner depicted on American currency.

  • George Washington: $1
  • Alexander Hamilton: $10
  • Ulysses S. Grant: $50

Even Lincoln's Vice President, Andrew Johnson, owned slaves.

In a sense, these bills could be considered "fraudulent" because they contain images of frauds—men who claimed to have high moral standards while simultaneously owning slaves. These banknotes possess monetary value, however they do not reflect modern values regarding race and justice.

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is

Many other nations have already updated their banknotes to reflect contemporary  values by including images of indigenous people, women, and other figures from previously marginalized groups.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Please sign and share this petition. The $20 bill is the most circulated bill of all U.S. bills and has iconic status. A new $20 bill is a practical way of creating change and an everyday reminder of what we value.

Thank you, even if for only having read this.
