Federal Protection for Lynx in New Mexico
The Issue
Although the U.S. government lists the beautiful and elusive lynx as "threatened" in neighboring Colorado as well as 13 other states, they enjoy no federal protection in New Mexico. In fact, last year, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar refused to extend protection to the lynx, stating that he had "higher priorities." Any lynx who happens to wander across an imaginary border - from Colorado to New Mexico - is at instant risk for legal slaughter.
