The community as a whole is negatively impacted when nurses are not provided safe patient ratios. Symptoms could be missed, medications administered late, and even medical mistakes and errors could occur. In 2021, Democratic Senator Brown, from Ohio, proposed bill S.1567 - Nurse Staffing Standards for Hospital Patient Safety and Quality Care Act of 2021 and sadly, this bill did not go anywhere. Hospitals are making record profits whilst placing increased burdens on hospital staff by assigning anywhere from six to ten patients per Registered Nurse. Hospitals are going as far as re-designating units that were PCU and step downs as medical surgical units in order to justify increased ratios while the actual patient acuity remains unchanged. This is a disservice to the community that not only expects safe and effective care but also to the very nurses that are entrusted by the community and clinicians to be effective and competent in safe healthcare delivery.
