FDA: Immediately take Essure off the market.

When I made the decision to use Essure, a permanent birth-control device, I was healthy and full of life. In September 2005, Essure was a new Bayer product on the market and came highly recommended by my doctor. I initially wanted to have my tubes tied; I had recently married and we were a bit older and not looking to start a family. My doctor explained that Essure was a safe, less invasive procedure, which meant less recovery so I could get back to work sooner. I didn’t think I would end up in the critical condition I am in now, and if I could turn back time and change my mind, I would.
Not long after the procedure, the complications started. I had chronic pelvic pain and without any change to my diet or exercise, I gained 30 pounds. I was referred to specialist after specialist, trying to treat all of my new ailments. None of the doctors pointed a finger at Essure. In 2009, I was back in my gynecologist's office complaining of abdominal pressure. After a simple ultrasound, she found a fibroid tumor that was attached to 5 of my major organs. While lack of research has been unable to link my symptoms to the device, I believe that the nickel-titanium alloy in the device created a toxic environment in my body.
As my symptoms continued to worsen, I had to leave my job and am now almost 100% reliant on my husband to care for me. I cannot drive, dress, or bathe myself without his help. I did some research and found there have been approximately 26 deaths and 10,000 complaints to the FDA regarding Essure. While the FDA told Bayer to conduct a post-market study to gather more data, the company came back claiming the benefits outweigh the risks.
I was thrilled to learn a bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers introduced the E-Free Act (H.R. 3920) on November 4, 2015, in hopes of pulling Essure off the market. This bill would require the FDA withdraw its approval of this product. However, even given all of the information, all of the necessary data, thousands of comments on dockets, and testimonies, the device is still on the market.
Therefore, I respectfully urge your support for thousands of women counting on Congress to take the necessary action to require the FDA to immediately take Essure off the market.
