Cucumbers are the real Watermelons

Cucumbers are the real Watermelons
The Issue
Currently, the word Watermelon is used to describe the fruit known as Citrullus Lanatus. It is, as Wikipedia describes it, "a plant species in the family Cucurbitaceae, a vine-like flowering plant originating in West Africa. It is a highly cultivated fruit worldwide, having more than 1000 varieties" As you would expect, this fruit has a high water content, of 92%. But, another fruit, in the melon, or Cucurbitaceae family, known as Cucumis sativus, or cucumber, actually has a higher water content, of 95%. The Cucumis sativus is described by Wikipedia as, "a widely cultivated plant in the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae [the same as the Citrullus Lanatus family]. It is a creeping vine that bears cuneiform fruits that are used as vegetables." Both fruits have a green outside, but inside of a Citrullus Lanatus is a red or pink opaque color when ripe, the Cucumis sativus on the other hand tends to be a clear or very light green color, more like that of true water. Due to the fact that what is known as cucumber is a melon, has a higher water content that the fruit known as the watermelon and appears more water-like. It makes sense that the cucumber should really be called a watermelon. Sign below to make sure that true watermelon gets its rightful name.
